Eat, Pray, Love… THE GAY FASHION EDITION

greg-lauren

This is September and I’m supposed to be excited about Fall/Winter ’10 Fashion. Honestly I’m not inspired. The shows echoed the same trends they have the past 4 seasons. 80’s, 60’s circa Mad Men, Classicism, Knitwear. Don’t get me wrong I love fashion & I have already purchased a new pair of boot cut trousers! (Yea! They’re back!) But isn’t there more?

elizabeth_gilbert_julia_roberts

Recently I saw Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts (Mediocre, spent too much time in India, Julia is luminous as always, Viola Davis & James Franco’s talents are wasted.) and it started me thinking. Everyone’s journey isn’t about finding yourself chanting to a cold looking Indian woman while flies swarm around you. Some of us want to Eat, Pray and Love in other ways. Since this is my blog we’re going to CONSUME, WORSHIP & STALK with joie de vivre!

EAT
Tender Greens with 4 locations, 2 in LA & 1 in San Diego, and a 5th opening in Walnut Creek, is becoming the hippest, healthiest restaurant chain on the planet. The owners describe it as comfortably urban and the majority of the produce comes directly from farms here in California.

Magnolia Bakery in New York is my happy place. Since 1996 they have been open at the legendary Bleecker St. location. 4 NYC locations later, they have finally opened in LA’s Beverlywood neighborhood on the corner of 3rd & Orlando Av. Have the carrot cake cupcake. It’s all about the cream cheese frosting!

Not-So-Instant Karma.

Much is written about the search for outer beauty. My life is about exulting the virtues of dressing well, living well and taking care of our skin and bodies. But what about inner beauty? Can you truly be beautiful outside if you are ugly within? And what constitutes inner beauty? Is it our personalities/mental outlook or is it our health/physical well-being? Well with TV shows like True Beauty and even America’s Next Top Model as well as innumerable others seeking to define just that question, I am tossing my proverbial hat in the ring.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is one of the worlds most famous idioms. It’s most often attributed to William Shakespeare but actually dates back to the 3rd Century. Justice Potter Stewart once tried to explain pornography, or what is obscene this way; “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced.. but I know it when I see it…” Beauty is much like this. And trying to define inner beauty? Well you’d have to define what inner beauty means to you.

The Proust Questionaire (Marcellas-style)!

The Proust Questionnaire is a fixture on the back page of Vanity Fair magazine. Who is Proust and what’s with all the questions you may ask? He’s a writer, gossip and legendary raconteur. Simply put, a gay icon. Click here for a more in-depth description of Proust and the start of his questionnaire.

TV’s Top Star Style Icons.

As a celebrity fashion stylist I spend a lot of time watching (and dressing) celebrities. It’s all research; style.com, magazines, red carpets, TV shows & movies. I often tell my personal shopping clients who find they are style challenged to pick a ‘Star Style Icon.’ It’s simply a celebrity whose style, whether it be on film or in real life, you admire. Study them. Figure out what they wear and why. Now this is not an invitation to stalk, especially if said style star is me, but it’s a way to see how others put things stylishly together. Once you’ve picked your icon, you just incorporate a little of that star swagger into your own!

Here are the 5 stars that I think are the best dressed men of stage and screen;

Stylish: The Musical!

farnsworth

Music is everywhere. It’s a part of everything we do. It’s blaring from the cars cruising down the street. It’s drifting from the powder room as your boyfriend sings in the shower. It’s the best part of our favorite TV shows like Ugly Betty and Glee (hell yeah I’m a proud Gleek)! These days who isn’t toting around their iPod, computer, MP3 player and even phone while grooving to their fave tunes. As Miss Grace Jones sings we ‘work to the rhythm, live to the rhythm, love to the rhythm‘. We’re all slaves to the rhythm!

Happy Green New Year!

nye-gridlock

The Holidays are blissfully over. You have eaten and spent too much. Your New Year resolutions probably have something to do with more time in the gym and more money in the bank. Normally I’m a huge proponent of luxe. In 2009 I told you about the newest sports cars, a $15,000 chandelier and of course every gorgeous stitch sewn by Dolce & Gabbana, D Squared, Ralph Lauren, John Varvatos… Well the list is endless! I’m starting the year turning a new leaf (at least for one month). This month I’m going super green and I’m telling you how to clean up your act and give yourself a facial at home! With common ingredients found at your local grocery store no less!

Marcellas Style! Part Deux

movie-star
I’ve been very good lately. I’m at a great place in the evolution of my wardrobe where I don’t need a thing (other than dropping 10 lbs). I know myself and my personal style very well. No more futzing with silly trends or adopting personae that feel like a costume. I’m a suit and a blazer boy. I like dressing like a man. I like an expensive watch, good shoes by Paul Smith & John Varvatos, pocket squares & bow ties. I like vintage western shirts, Daftbird tees, Earnest Sewn custom made jeans, G Shock & Nixon watches & old school trainers. And I love a trench coat. I like my pants boot cut, blazers double vented and love shirts with tuxedo detailing. See, I know what I like, what suits me and it makes shopping very easy.

So here’s the list of what’s going and coming:
Black Ted Baker “Hake” Calfskin Lace-up (a bargain at $170)
